Welcome to the Creepy Crawlies page!! We do carry a small variety of "bugs" at the store so I decided to share them with you. This section is actually Trudy's favorite... SO.... This page is for you Mom!!
I'm going to start with the tarantulas considering Trudy loves them so much she sent me a ton of pictures to use. Personally I have a phobia of most insects... so obviously some of my mother's traits have yet to rub off.

Okay, first question... Why would anyone want a pet tarantula?? Maybe because they don't bark at visitors and they don't tear up your brand new furniture sharpening their claws. Next question.... what do they eat?? bugs including crickets and moths. and sometimes depending on the size... newborn to small sized mice. Out in the wild some tarantulas are known to eat birds!!!! and last and most certainly not least What kind and how do you sex them? well my first photo shows the front legs of a mature adult male, and all the rest are different varieties. I do suggest, however, that if you decide to have more than one of these amazing creatures... you keep them in their own separate homes. Tarantulas are territorial and will kill intruders, even their own kind. Females will kill males after a successful breeding if they aren't quick to get away fast enough. If you do decide to house a small community together, I suggest the pink toed variety. They are very docile and tolerant of each other. Bites from tarantulas are not uncommon, so if you're new with these guys and you startle one and get bitten, I would keep a bee sting kit nearby. So if you're allergic to bees, don't mess with any of these. But now... Here's Spidey!!!!

Boehmi

Emilia

Mexican Red Leg

Geniculata (scientific) Or...

Also known as Striped Knee (Common)

Seemanni

Versicolor

Metalica

Blondi

Anybody got the willies yet???

The next selection I have here is rather small... It seems that scorpians aren't very popular around here, so there are very few to choose from. The most popular is the emporer scorpian, and yes those are the ones in the movies. They are relatively harmless, but will sting if provoked. So if you are allergic to bees, I suggest you don't fool with them. The sting is a bit stronger than a bee, and like the tarantulas above, if you get bitten or stung I suggest a bee sting kit would be a wise purchase if you're not used to handling your critter.

Personally.... I'll stick with the hermit crabs. the only thing to worry on them is getting pinched by that huge claw!!!! oh, and they don't like to let go either. They are low maintenance, require a shallow dish for water, they eat pellets that resemble ground meat and dried bugs. And they love to climb. The hardest part you need to worry about is making sure the next shell you pick out is to their satisfaction. Hermit crabs are a bit picky when it comes to a new shell. They climb all over it, measure the opening with that big claw, and to quote a phrase, "If the shoe fits... wear it!!" they pull out of the old shell and slip into the new one.
